Welcome!
Thank you for visiting the IUPUI Department of Chemistry & Chemical Biology web pages!
We are pleased to be part of a vibrant university of 30,000 students that represents the
most comprehensive Indiana campus for undergraduate, graduate, and professional
education. Indeed, we are the only campus within the IU system that brings together the
Arts, Sciences, Engineering, Law and Medicine in one location at the heart of the "Life
Sciences" hub of Indiana. Our goals are to carry out cutting edge research and to
provide a stimulating and productive environment for the education of future scientists.
The Department offers programs culminating in Ph.D. & M.S. graduate degrees, an American
Chemical Society-certified B.S. degree in Chemistry (with both chemistry and
biochemistry options), preprofessional B.A. degrees, and an A.S. degree. These programs
are built upon a tradition of close student-faculty interactions that are tailored to
individual student objectives and the needs of employers within the urban environment of
Indianapolis, the 13th largest city in the United States. Graduate students in our
Department find a particularly close mentoring relationship with research-active
faculty and undergraduate chemistry majors experience hands-on work in well-equipped
laboratories with many taking the opportunity to participate in undergraduate research.
Along with traditional disciplinary pursuits, our Department offers ample opportunities
for interdisciplinary work through close faculty ties with the Indiana University School
of Medicine, including the IU Cancer Center, the Indiana Genomics Initiative (INGEN),
and the Biomolecular Engineering program on the IUPUI campus. Emerging focus areas of
interdisciplinary study within the Department include chemical biology, bioanalysis,
chemical genomics, combinatorial chemistry, molecular imaging, and drug development.
These focus areas are enhanced by the presence of major life-sciences corporations in
Indianapolis such as Eli Lilly, DowAgro Sciences and Roche, which employ many IUPUI
graduates at all degree levels.
As the new Chair of the Department, I am excited to be involved. We have a number of new
initiatives in the works including the addition of new faculty. Whether you are
interested in our research, graduate school opportunities, or undergraduate degree
programs, we invite you to explore our website, contact us, and visit our campus to see
the great things happening at IUPUI!
Sincerely,
Jay A. Siegel
